The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to enhance safety and quality of Electric Vehicles introduced two new standards IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606 2024 for electric vehicles (EVs) in India.
The IS 18590: 2024 standard focuses on the safety of electric powertrains for L, M, and N category EVs. While, the IS 18606: 2024 standard pertains to the safety of batteries for L, M, and N category EVs.
As we know BIS aims to benefit the national economy by providing safe, reliable, and quality goods, minimizing health hazards to consumers, protecting the environment, promoting exports, and controlling the proliferation of varieties.
These new BIS standards aim to enhance the safety and quality of EVs by mandating stringent requirements for powertrains and batteries. They cover aspects such as electrical safety, thermal management, and mechanical integrity.
This is a significant step by BIS towards promoting the adoption of EVs in India and ensuring their safety and reliability. With these new additions, now BIS has a total of 30 Indian Standards completely dedicated to electric vehicles and their accessories, including charging systems.
